5 Cornish Songs arr. Alex Roche

Alex Roche began his musical career as a guitarist, bass player and percussionist playing in jazz bands and orchestras around his hometown Cornwall before discovering the classical guitar aged 17. After falling in love with the instrument, one year later, he successfully auditioned for the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) where he was under the tutelage of Mark Ashford and Mark Eden. Alex was awarded the highest final recital mark of all instrumentalists in his year, graduating with a first-class bachelor’s degree. Soon after, he gained a scholarship through the Leverhulme Trust to study in London at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance where he studied with Graham Devine and graduated with a first-class master’s degree. Alex has performed solo recitals at prestigious venues including; St Martin-in-the-Fields, St. James’s Piccadilly, Hellys International Guitar Festival, Arts Himmelblau (Taipei), Blackheath Halls and many more. He has performed as a concerto soloist, notably with the RBC orchestra at the CBSO centre, performing Heitor Villa-Lobos' concerto for guitar. In 2018, he was also invited back to the RBC to give a recital and the world premiere performance of a lost guitar work by English Composer William Lloyd-Webber attended by Julian Lloyd-Webber. Performances in masterclasses include internationally renowned artists such as; David Russell, Alvaro Pierri, Roberto Aussell, Marcin Dylla, John Mills, Xuefei Yang, and Ali Arango. Alex has won numerous competitions including the Birmingham Conservatoire Guitar Competition, Conservatoire Strings Etudes Prize, Alison Stephens Competition, Montagu Cleeve Award and was also awarded second prize in the Worshipful Company of Musicians' prestigious Ivor Mairants prize. Alex made his international debut giving a solo recital at the Arts Himmelblau Centre in Taipei, Taiwan, hosted by the Taiwan Guitar Society.
