The
Waldstein Quartet currently hold the Philip Carne Junior Fellowship for a Chamber Ensemble at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Greta Papa (violin), Daniel Pukach (violin), Natalia Solis Paredes (viola) and Miguel Villeda (cello) formed their quartet at Trinity Laban, and have become an accomplished group, with notable performance at the Wigmore Hall, St James's Piccadilly and other venues in London. Winners of the Trinity Laban Barbirolli String Quartet Competition, and finalists at the Carne Trust Chamber Competition 2022, they were also finalists at the Cavatina Intercollegiate Chamber Music competition 2022.
Christos Fountos, currently holder of a Philip Carne Junior Fellowship for a Chamber Ensemble, was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1997. At age 15, he was awarded the Piano Diploma (Ptychion) by the National Conservatory of Cyprus with Highest Distinction and two years later he performed Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no.2 in his debut, with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. At the age of 18, Christos started studying under Philip Fowke at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London. He graduated in 2019 (BMus in Performance) with top marks, the Director’s Award for Excellence in Piano, the Silver Medal, the Nancy Thomas Prize for the highest achieving undergraduate piano student and as a Gold Medal nominee. He completed his Master’s degree (MMus in Performance) in 2021, studying with full scholarship under Martino Tirimo and Sergio de Simone at the same institution, and a Postgraduate Artist Diploma course in 2022. Christos regularly performs solo piano repertoire and chamber music, and has been a soloist with the Croydon Symphony Orchestra, the Sampson Orchestra of Cambridge and the Guildford Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, Christos performed Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No .3 with the Epsom Symphony Orchestra and the Sampson Orchestra of Cambridge and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no.3 with the Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he performed two concerts dedicated to Olivier Messiaen, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the composer’s death, a concert of new music in his native Cyprus, and represented Trinity Laban in the 2022 Cavatina Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition at Wigmore Hall.
Christos has been a Leventis Foundation scholar, a Jaqueline Williams and Trinity College London scholar, and a Musicians’ Company Silver Medal winner. At Trinity Laban he has also received the Weingarten Prize for piano, the Raymond Russel Prize for harpsichord, and twice the Geoffrey Singleton Prize for contemporary piano.
