Lunchtime Concert: Bolling Quartet

Take a moment in the middle of the day to enjoy a programme of music by Trinity Laban ensemble the Bolling Quartet at the stunningly beautiful St Alfege Church.

The Bolling Quartet were finalists in the 2022 Carne Chamber Competition, performing at St. John's Smith Square. They play music that blurs the boundaries between the classical and jazz genres. Within the group, Raymond and Catriona play as a classical duo and Ethan and Kobe comprise part of popular band The Amalgam. The group are grateful to have received coaching from Richard and Melanie Henry.

Catriona Bourne Swinton Hunter is currently studying postgraduate flute performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, with the support of a TCL Scholarship, Bibby Award Scholarship and a Michael Hirst Award Scholarship. She is also a Choral Scholar with the Trinity Laban Chapel Choir at the Old Royal Naval College. While at school Catriona was a UK Finalist in the 2010 Rotary Young Musician of the Year Competition, and she performed for Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Alexandra. Catriona read Music at University College, Oxford, where she was a Choral Scholar and Ensemble Isis Scholar. She then attained a PGCE and Master’s in Music Education at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where she received an Instrumental Award from the Faculty of Music and a Lincoln Award and Garrett Award from Magdalene College. In 2018, she attended Emily Beynon's Neflac course as a Young International Professional. Catriona performed as a concerto soloist with Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra in March 2019 and as the flute soloist for a re-working of Saariaho's flute concerto with Cambridge University New Music Ensemble. She additionally collaborated as a flute soloist with the Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge on a performance of Bettinis' Cedit Hyems. Catriona won the 2022 Harold Clarke Woodwind Competition at Trinity Laban and was a Highly Commended Young Artist at the 2022 Flutes in Tuscany course and concert series in Tereglio, Italy. She was a Finalist in the 2022 Trinity Laban Soloists’ Competition, as the sole representative of Trinity's Wind, Brass and Percussion Department.

Born in Hong Kong, Raymond Wui-Man Yiu began piano lessons aged four. He moved to Aberdeen, Scotland in 2008 and attended the Aberdeen City Music School studying the piano with Peter Evans. He made his concerto debut performing Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 with the Meadows Chamber Orchestra in Edinburgh in 2010. Since winning the title of Aberdeen Young Musician of the Year, he performed concertos by Schumann, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff and Grieg with orchestras in Scotland. He went on to study with Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he obtained his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees with Distinction. Notable prizes include 3rd Prize at 2019 Norah Sande Awards, Highly Commended Prize at 2019 Bromsgrove International Musicians’ Competition and 3rd Prize at 2018 Windsor International Piano Competition, which led to an invitation to join the KNS Classical Label. He is currently on the Artist Diploma programme at Trinty Laban Conservatoire as a Trinity College of Music scholar studying with Gabriele Baldocci. He is grateful for the support by the Leathersellers’ Company, Deena Shypitka Music Award, Dewar Arts Awards, Phyllis Simons Award, the Guildhall School Trust and Christine Brown Trust. As a teacher, Raymond works for the London Youth Conservatoire, Encore Piano Tuition, Greenwich Music School, and THAMES. He is conducting ongoing research on the teaching and music by Tobias Matthay, an influential English piano pedagogue in the 20th century.

Ethan Windle is a drummer and percussionist from Lincoln. Before studying at Trinity Laban he performed regularly in the area both Orchestrally and as a Marimba Soloist, notably as the featured soloist at the Lincoln Cathedral Christmas concert. Now in his second year, Ethan is enjoying his time at Trinity Laban learning under the tuition of Mick Doran for percussion, Steve White for drum kit and Callum Huggan for marimba. Ethan is enjoying playing a variety of styles and instruments and has developed a passion for music from South America and Africa, particularly Afro-Cuban styles playing the congas in a range of ensembles, working closely with legendary timbalero Roberto Pla. He was also a soloist at Trinity Laban Percussion Ensemble’s Autumn concert, playing the xylophone music of George Hamilton Green. Ethan regularly plays drum kit and percussion freelance with ensembles across London and is looking forward to completing his degree and building a career in music.

Kobe Heath-Ngugi grew up in Woolwich, attending the BRIT School for performing arts. He now studies Jazz at Trinity. He has a weekly residency at 34 Mayfair, and plays for multiple groups including Afro-pop band The Amalgam, Leon Tilbrook and Miles From Nowhere.
